For instance a 2.8l 6 Cly Audi A4 compared to a 3.8l 6 Cyl Pontiac Prand Prix SE.Why are Audi engines smaller then a typical engine?Audi takes smaller displacement engines and runs high compression, or sometimes, mid compression with turbochargers in their vehicles to make decent low and mid range torque and good high end horsepower. Most American companies make larger displacement, lower compression engines to provide good low end and mid range torque with acceptable top end horsepower. Why are Audi engines smaller then a typical engine?
Probably to get better gas milage.....im not really sure but the guy above me is probably right. Why are Audi engines smaller then a typical engine?Because the technology is more advanced. They don't need big engines to make over 200HP. And most of their 4 cylinder engines are turbocharged.
For example, the 3.4L 6 cylinder engine in the Porsche Cayman S makes 295HP.
While the Ford Mustang GT has a 5.0L V8 engine makng 300HP.
Clearly, Porsche is more advanced. Why are Audi engines smaller then a typical engine?
gas mileage and being more eco friendlyWhy are Audi engines smaller then a typical engine? The 1st guy is right.
You also need to compare equal cars. I'm not going to look up which year A4 had that engine so I'll just compare newer cars.
Audi A4 (2007)
- Starts at about $35k for that engine goes up to about $46k loaded.
- Its a compact.
- Its an entry level luxury car.
- 3.1 V6 255hp @ 6500 rpm %26amp; 243 lb-ft @ 3250 rpm
Pontiac Grand Prix SE (2007)
- Costs about $22k.
- Right on the line between mid size and full size.
- Its just a regular car.
- 3.8 V6 200 hp @ 5200 rpm %26amp; 230 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm.
Fancy stuff costs money. For 50-100% more money you better get a bunch of it.
A better comparision is a Caddy CTS vs. Audi A4.
CTS SIDI (2008)
- Starts at $35k.
- Midsize so a little larger.
- Its an entry level luxury car.
- 3.6 V6, 304 hp @ 6400 rpm %26amp; 273 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm
CS7 - The Cayman costs as much as a Vette and runs with a Mustang. Thats something to brag about. The Mustang hasnt had a 5.0 L engine since 94 or 95. Get with the times.
